FAQ's

Do I need a visa for a STAGES work experience?

If you come from an EU or EEA member country or Switzerland, you do not need a visa or work permit. The programme is also open to people with certain kinds of Tier 4 student visas or Tier 5 Working Holiday or Government Authorised Exchange visas. Please ask for further information.

What level does my English language need to be?

The minimum level to start a work experience through STAGES is Pre-Intermediate (CEFR A2+). However the options for students with this level are limited. Most sectors require a higher level with many requesting B2 level English or above.

What type of accommodation should I choose?

Staying with an English host family is a great way to save money and to learn more about everyday life in Britain, as well as to improve your English language skills. We recommend staying with a host family at least until you feel settled in Brighton and your work placement, and we can arrange this for you.

How much does travel cost in Brighton?

You can buy daily, weekly or monthly bus passes that are valid on Brighton and Hove buses. Full details and prices can be found here: www.buses.co.uk

You can buy digital tickets via your smartphone (this is usually the cheapest option), a key card from the bus company's office on North Street in Brighton or a weekly scratchcard ticket.

Will there be an interview?

Possibly. Some companies like to meet students prior to the start of the internship, particularly for placements in marketing, events, IT or tourism. It is less likely in retail or catering. If you are in the UK we can arrange a face-to-face meeting. If you are not in the country we will arrange a Skype interview with the company. Whatever the situation, STAGES will organise everything.

How should I prepare for my first day at my work placement company?

STAGES will send you a profile with details of your placement company. This will include typical tasks, hours of work and any dress code that applies. We can answer any questions you may have but we would strongly recommend familiarising yourself with the company's website to find out more about them and the services they offer.

What hours will I work?

This will vary depending on the sector and company. For example office-based placements are usually from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Placements in retail, catering, hospitality and tourism usually involve working at least one day at the weekend and some involve shift work. You will work the usual hours of the company you are in, but will always have two days off per week.

What if I have problems at my work placement company?

All the companies we work with have been checked and approved. The STAGES team will remain in touch with you during your placement and you can telephone or e-mail us if you have any questions or just want to have a chat! We are here to support you.

Will someone meet me at the airport?

Stages can arrange a personal pickup/drop off service. Prices vary according to the arrival airport.
